Brazil's First Astronaut Reached Orbit

ISS Expedition 13 commander Pavel Vinogradov, flight engineer Jeffrey Williams and Brazilian astronaut Marcos Pontes successfully reached orbit at 9:39 p.m. EST (0239 March 30 GMT) after what appeard to be a picture perfect launch. Tucked inside their Soyuz TMA-8 spacecraft, the astronauts will spend the next two days chasing down the ISS.

Col Pontes had been in training for the flight since 1998
Lt Col Marcos Pontes has become the first Brazilian to go into space after a successful launch aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket from Baikonur.
He will spend nine days on the International Space Station while a Russian and a US colleague accompanying him will stay for six months.

Expedition 12 captured some spectacular photographs of the moon's shadow on the Earth during Wednesday's (Crystal Dog - 9.23) eclipse. Expedition 13 also spoke about the solar eclipse. Astronaut Jeff Williams said the reaction to the eclipse on the day of the launch of the 13th crew of the International Space Station reminds "all of us who work in the space exploration program just what our purpose is, for discovery and exploration, and understanding the unknown."
